Tauernhof Newsletter - October 2017

„I do not believe in the power of my prayers, but I believe in the power of God - this is why I pray!”
I mentioned this sentence as I was teaching at our Bible School last week, and explained that the effectiveness of prayer does not lie in how we pray, in how long or how often. Neither does the effectiveness of my prayer lie in pray itself, but purely in the power of God.
A student came to me afterwards and explained that she was raised and taught differently. She was taught that if she did not feel her prayers were heard, something was not right in her life. Either she was not praying properly, or she had sins in her life that needed to be dealt with before her prayers would be heard. Well, this certainly seems plausible if I assume that it is because of my prayer and sinless life that man becomes saved, healed or spared from evil and harm. If, in addition to this thinking, I were to read James 5:16 (KJV) where it says; “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”, then it seems to make sense that the more “fervently” I pray, the better effect my prayers have.
I am well aware that if I'm living a life of sin, I cannot expect my prayers to be heard by God. But the question is a different one altogether, namely: If my prayers were responsible for, let’s say, someone being healed of sickness or not, could I ever live under such a weight? Would God ever impose such a burden on us?
The Apostle Paul has learned that “it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” (Phil. 2:13) And our Lord Jesus says: “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.” (Jn. 5:17)
Let us not become proud in assuming that it is our prayer that is effective in and of itself. Instead, let the effect of my prayer be the alignment of my heart with the heart of God, coming with empty hands before Jesus Christ, and expecting everything from HIM and nothing from myself.
“Prayer is the mysterious connection between the impotence of mankind and the omnipotence of God.” (Jakob Abrell/German Poet)
Those who acknowledge this truth cannot but pray because they know that HIS power is made perfect in weakness. (2 Cor. 12.9)
My hope is that our prayers would not simply fulfill a sense of spiritual obligation, but rather be an expression of our joy in Jesus Christ - the Almighty. (read Ephesians 1:18-20)

Bible School

Students and Staff of Fall Bible School 2017

As colorful as the leaves are as the season turns to Autumn, so is the vibrancy of our new Student Body this Fall semester of Bible School. With 80 students from 9 different nations, our Bible School is off to a good start. It is such a blessing to see so many students from different backgrounds coming together to study God’s Word and allowing their relationships with the Lord to grow. Once again, we have the opportunity to minister in local schools, nursing homes, hospitals and even in the Main Street of our village of Schladming. A small group of students will also head to Romania again to bring the Good News into schools and various homes.

Sports Reach

For the last 24 years and continuing, we have had a group of soccer players from England that come and challenge our local soccer teams. Sports Reach has the mission to share God’s Word through sports. Immediately after each game, these players share their testimonies and the Gospel, passing on Bibles and Christian literature to the local players. Over the past 24 years, there have already been many players and family members that have come and trusted their lives to Jesus Christ. From the 23rd-30th of September, we hosted a men's team. Following them will be a team of women who will play against our local women's league from the 21st-29th of October, with the help of some ladies from Germany.

Circle of Friends

From the 17th - 29th of September, there was a group from “Freundeskreis für Suchtkrankenhilfe” (a ministry for addicts) staying in Ramsau. Together with Heli Rettensteiner, we were able to complete a Christ-centered Adventure Program with them. Through their previous encounters with drugs and alcohol, they had to learn to set up boundaries for themselves. During this outdoor seminar, we challenged them to allow God to set boundaries in their lives. Many of them have experienced disappointment, or have disappointed others in their lives. These former addicts must now learn to trust others and, most and foremost, God again, in order to move into another kind of dependency – a dependency in Jesus Christ.

Jubilee Projekt

The plans are as good as finished. Our wish is still that we would be able to begin construction by April of 2018. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank all who have contributed already and continue to contribute to our building project. Several times, we have received inquiries as to whether the option of an interest-free loan over a particular time frame could be helpful. This, of course, would benefit and advance the progress of our building project in regards to planning and development.
Many Tauernhof-Friends have already offered their time to help on our building site, for which I am very thankful. Given that our funds are not yet sufficient, we do not yet have a definite “yes” for a start in April. This naturally complicates planning on our side, as well as the vacation planning for our volunteers. My prayer and my wish is that by the end of November this year, we might have a clear YES or NO for the start of construction in 2018. At this point, we have funds on hand of about 1€ million. This already constitutes one third (Praise the Lord!) of our total building cost, which we have been able to save over the past few years. In order to receive a clear YES to begin our project in April, there is still a larger sum that we must meet.
We ask that God would continue to guide us, and are so very thankful for all your prayers and financial support during this time.
